SHOULD I REPLACE OR FIX A CRACKED WINDSHIELD?
Actually, that rock was probably not that big, but driving at considerable speed certainly makes the scene more dramatic. What should not be taken lightly is that mark on your windshield. Cracks and splinters in your window may not seem like a big problem, but they impact your visibility and are a safety hazard.
If you have a serious imperfection in your windshield, it can be tempting to simply ignore it or look around to save time and money, but leaving the crack and driving with it is not an option.
“Cracks and chips often grow more and more if they are not repaired or replaced,” explains Roira Smith, President of the Automatic Glass Safety Council (AGSC).
“Cracked glass can be compromised and the windshield is part of the vehicle’s security system,” he explains.
IT CAN BE FIXED?
There are two main solutions to deal with a broken windshield. You can fill a crack if it is small enough, or you can replace the entire windshield. The latter is the most expensive option, while the first is for small imperfections. It’s like dealing with serious bodly injury or splinter, but your windshield is much more important in terms of your safety than the paint on your car.
“Whether it can be repaired or not, it depends on a number of factors, including the type of breakage, the location of the breakage and the amount of time the glass has broken,” says Smith. But what is important is that it be solved soon, as Smith explained that cracks and chips can grow more and more if they are not repaired or replaced.

“The repair of standard glass automatic laminate allows the repair of cracks of 14 inches or less,” he explains, so cracks that are larger need a complete glass replacement. Some quick investigations show that certain types of cracks and splinters simply cannot be repaired. For example, if the damage extends from the outer panel of the glass and penetrates inside, it is too deep to be repaired. Corner chips or tight spots are often too difficult to repair as well, so be aware. If the crack has spread after the initial damage, it is a clear sign that the glass needs to be replaced. Also consider things like temperature sensors, radio antennas and other high technology that can be embedded in the windshield that can affect if the glass has to be repaired and increase the cost of a replacement.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO FIX OR REPLACE A WINDSHIELD?
A crack or chip repair takes between 30 to 40 minutes and is done by injecting a transparent resin. When it hardens, the resin helps restore the integrity and smooth appearance of the glass. The resin is polished and cured with UV or Sunlight. If done correctly, the dent or crack will not be able to spread further.
Replacing the glass of a car is a bit compromising if not being performed well. After preparing the car body to avoid any damage, technicians will remove the windshield from the car. Seals and adhesives are also removed, and a primer on the bare frame is used, so a new glue and sealant can be applied to the replacement glass. The new windshield is then mounted and attached to the car. After the glass is mounted, most car stores encourage a 60 minute wait time so that the windshield is properly connected to the car.
